In the week leading up to Thanksgiving, Brow Beat will be providing all the essential recipes you need to celebrate the holiday with culinary aplomb. One of the family photographs I remember most from my childhood is one of my mother, very young and a little nervous, standing in our kitchen, wearing a very s-ish apron, hovering over her first turkey before putting it in the oven. I can say one thing with certainty, though: My mother, in roasting that turkey, cooked it wrong. Advertisement There is only one good way to make a Thanksgiving turkey, and that is to deep-fry it. Butterball apparently disagrees with me and is marketing an indoor fryer.

It is often served at local fundraisers in Amish-influenced communities, and is always a crowd pleaser. I have fond memories of helping my Mama de-bone the cooked chicken, roll out the stiff dough, and cut it into beautiful diamonds. While teaching my girls how to make it, their favorite part of the process was making the noodles. Some recipes call for the addition of carrots, onions and celery, and other herbs and spices.
Begin by placing a whole chicken in a large pot, and cover it with water. Cool, and remove from broth. De-bone chicken and cut into large chunks. Strain broth and place back into pot. Add chicken and salt. Bring to simmer over low heat. To make noodles, place flour and eggs into mixer bowl. Mix, using dough hook attachment.
Add cream, one tablespoon at a time, until dough forms. You can see my daughter had fun with this step.

Although it’s not what most Americans would call “Pot Pie”, this traditional Pennsylvania Dutch Chicken stew with homemade noodles, is the first thing that comes to mind when talking about Pot Pie, with anyone from the Amish culture.
Steve Gordon August 27, 25 Comments Field peas, fresh from the garden, are a great side dish to all types of meals. I was very thankful to receive them…especially since they were already shelled…. I never was one that enjoyed trying to shell peas or butter beans. Maybe that was why I started my nail biting in the first place, as a means to get out of shelling peas. Fresh vegetables just have a totally awesome different taste than those that are canned or frozen.
During the summer, they are usually available already shelled at our local roadside stands or at the North Carolina State Farmers Market about 45 minutes away. All will be a great side dish and all are prepared pretty much the same way. So, grab some when you can and…. Bacon will work, bacon grease will work, salt pork and a few others will work.

It has been a long-standing tradition throughout the centuries to chow down on the slow simmered remains of our fallen enemies, but this culinary art form received little recognition in western culture. Like the tomato, which was once thought to be poisonous, human flesh is actually a very healthy alternative to the hormone-injected meat you find at your local supermarket, and eating a person is not a soul crushing sin like some conservative religions want you to believe.
The fact is that human flesh is both flavorful and full of the essential nutrition our bodies need.

What the housewife used to cook meals: The photographs and drawings are probably all hers. GPL scanned and formatted text and images, added headings, and cut and rearranged some portions of the text, moving, for example, the section on cooking pots earlier in the text here than in the original. Fireplace Hangers Wooden “Crochan” from the Hebrides. It was equally suitable where, in some remote moorland places, there was no true peat for the alternative fuel — parings of peaty soils containing tufts of heath and gorse.
In the simplest cottages the usual cooking utensil was the three-legged iron pot. It could either stand in the hot ashes on its three short legs or hang by the swinging handle, the chimney was the wooden chimney bar, stretching across, the ends let into the masonry. It was of oak, or preferably, of chestnut; in section higher than wide and with the upper edge rounded. Over this passed the curved top end of the hanger, an iron bar with a flat sheet-iron ratchet attachment looking like a coarse saw.
The lowest end of the upright had either a closed loop or a knob, from which hung the hook that caught one of the teeth of the ratchet. The hanger could thus be set either high or low, according to the liveliness of the fire or the degree of heat required for the cooking. The most primitive form of hanger was the wooden “crochan,” by which the pot, slung from above by a hazel rope, hung over the fire at right.

Previously I was brewing indoors and it would take forever to bring the water to a boil. I already had a natural gas connection outside, so this was perfect. I have moved up to a 10 gallon brewpot and this boiler supports it with ease. Not sure that I personally would go bigger, but this boiler is sturdy and powerful enough to support it if I did. I am planning to try the boiler for other things too. The boiler arrived in great shape and I got a follow-up call from the owner to be sure I was satisfied.

Yes, but it is very important to understand that starting to cook with cold stoneware and cold food will affect the ramp up time of the slow cooker. Always add sufficient time into the cook time to ensure food is safe, as well as tender. Never place your stoneware whether it has been refrigerated or is at room temperature in a pre-heated slow cooker base. Using an instant read thermometer will ensure that your unit is up to temperature. My food seems to be cooking too fast — what should I do?
If cooking with the high setting and food has been cooking for less than hours, then turn the setting to low to slow down the cooking process. Reheating is not recommended. Many slow cooker dishes are just as good the day after, before the flavors have had time to blend together.
