My first encounter with American hotels was in Miami many years ago. In its day, it was OTT, with film stars spending time there. Mafia bosses used it as a meeting place to sort out turf wars. It was also a place where the late June and Austin Wilson, two Liverpool characters who owned the Famous Army and Navy stores, had some expensive jewellery stolen many years ago. That hotel is now dated and I find this is the problem with Vegas.

The first time I went, I stayed at Circus Circus which was then one of the best destinations. Each time you go back, the hotels get bigger and better, all trying to outdo each other. Steve Wynn, of the Wynn hotel, has got it right.
